ครม. มีมติเห็นชอบเมื่อวันที่ 28 ก.พ. 2566 ให้เสนอผ้าขาวม้าขึ้นทะเบียนต่อ UNESCO เป็นมรดกวัฒนธรรมที่จับต้องไม่ได้ของมนุษยชาติ โดยจะนำเสนอยังยูเนสโกภายในเดือนมีนาคม 2566

ผ้าขาวม้า เป็นผ้าที่ชาวไทยต่างรู้จักมักคุ้นเป็นอย่างดี ด้วยเป็นผ้าเอนกประสงค์ที่ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน ซึ่งอาจกล่าวอย่างสากลได้ว่า ผ้าขาวม้าเป็น Multifunctional cloths in Thai life คำว่า ผ้าขาวม้า นี้ไม่ใช่ภาษาไทย บ้างว่ามาจากภาษาเปอร์เซีย คือ กามาร์บันด์ (Kamar Band) ซึ่งหมายถึง เอว หรือ ท่อนล่างของร่างกาย “บันด์” หมายถึง การพัน รัด หรือ คาด
