Plagiarism คือ การโจรกรรมทางวิชาการ หรือการลอกเลียนวรรณกรรม  เป็นการแอบอ้างงานเขียนหรืองานสร้างสรรค์ดั้งเดิมของผู้อื่น ไม่ว่าจะนำทั้งหมดหรือนำมาบางส่วน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการขโมยความคิด คัดลอกคำต่อคำ คัดลอกเนื้อหา คัดลอกกระบวนการ หรือแม้แต่สรุปความแล้วนำเสนอให้ดูเหมือนว่าตนเองเป็นผู้คิดค้น ดำเนินการ นำมาใช้ในงานของตนเองโดยไม่มีการอ้างอิงแหล่งที่มา (Citation) หรือประกาศเกียรติคุณ (Acknowledgment)  นอกจากนั้นการคัดลอกผลงานของตนเอง ก็ถือว่าเป็น self plagiarism ด้วย (กุลธิดา ท้วมสุข, 2560; ชูชาติ หฤไชยะศักดิ์ และสันติพงษ์ ไทยประยูร, ม.ป.ป.)
