การเผชิญกับปัญหาการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ การขาดแคลนทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ และการใช้พลังงานอย่างไม่ยั่งยืน องค์กรต่าง ๆ โดยเฉพาะสถาบันการศึกษาและห้องสมุด จำเป็นต้องปรับบทบาทจากการเป็นเพียงแหล่งเรียนรู้ไปสู่การเป็นต้นแบบด้านการจัดการทรัพยากรอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ แนวคิด “ห้องสมุดสีเขียว” (Green Library) จึงได้รับการส่งเสริมอย่างต่อเนื่อง เนื่องจากเป็นการบูรณาการการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมเข้ากับภารกิจหลักของห้องสมุดอย่างเป็นรูปธรรม

หนึ่งในแนวทางที่สามารถดำเนินการได้จริงและเห็นผลชัดเจน คือ การใช้ทรัพยากรอย่างคุ้มค่า ลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม เช่น การนำน้ำจากท่อน้ำทิ้งของเครื่องปรับอากาศกลับมาใช้ประโยชน์ ซึ่งถือเป็นทรัพยากรหมุนเวียนที่เกิดจากการใช้งานประจำวัน โดยเฉพาะในประเทศเขตร้อนอย่างประเทศไทยที่มีการใช้เครื่องปรับอากาศอย่างแพร่หลาย น้ำจากเครื่องปรับอากาศเกิดจากกระบวนการควบแน่นของไอน้ำในอากาศ จึงมีลักษณะเป็นน้ำใส มีปริมาณแร่ธาตุละลายต่ำ และมีความสะอาดในระดับหนึ่ง หากมีการจัดการที่เหมาะสมก็สามารถนำกลับมาใช้ประโยชน์ได้
