ในการก่อสร้าง คำว่า “ปูนซีเมนต์” และ “คอนกรีต” มักถูกใช้แทนกันไปมา ทั้งที่ความจริงแล้ววัสดุทั้งสองชนิดนี้มีคุณสมบัติ หน้าที่ และการใช้งานที่แตกต่างกันอย่างชัดเจน หากเข้าใจความแตกต่างอย่างถูกต้อง จะช่วยให้เลือกใช้งานได้อย่างเหมาะสมและปลอดภัยยิ่งขึ้น

ปูนซีเมนต์ (Cement) คือวัสดุผงละเอียดสีเทา ผลิตจากหินปูน ดินเหนียว และแร่ยิปซัม ผ่านกระบวนการเผาที่อุณหภูมิสูงจนกลายเป็นผง ปูนซีเมนต์เองไม่สามารถใช้เดี่ยว ๆ ได้ จำเป็นต้องผสมน้ำเพื่อแข็งตัว หรือใช้ร่วมกับวัสดุอื่นเพื่อเป็นองค์ประกอบในการผลิตวัสดุก่อสร้าง เช่น คอนกรีต โดยมักใช้ในงานก่ออิฐ ฉาบผนัง หรือในงานซ่อมแซมทั่วไป
