หนังสือนับว่าเป็นทรัพยากรสารสนเทศที่มีความสำคัญในห้องสมุด หนังสือทุกเล่มมีค่า มีราคาที่แตกต่างกัน แต่มีคุณค่าเท่าเทียมกันทุกเล่ม ห้องสมุดแต่ละแห่งหาวิธีการต่างๆ เพื่อรักษาสภาพของหนังสือให้อยู่คงสภาพเดิมไว้ให้ได้นานที่สุด เช่นเดียวกับห้องสมุดของเราก็หาวิธีรักษาสภาพของหนังสือที่เข้ามาใหม่ทุกเล่ม ทั้งหนังสือที่ซื้อเข้ามา และหนังสือที่ได้รับบริจาค เมื่อนำมาเตรียมตัวเล่มเสร็จแล้ว ก็จะนำตัวเล่มหนังสือมาเย็บสันใหม่ บรรณารักษ์ให้หมวดหมู่เรียบร้อย ก็จะนำตัวเล่มมาทำสันหนังสือ คือ พิมพ์สัน ติดเลขหมู่ที่สันหนังสือ และเคลือบฟิล์มที่เลขหมู่หนังสือเพื่อมิให้ลบเลือน และหลุดหาย ที่แล้วมาเคลือบฟิล์มเฉพาะแลขหมู่หนังสือเท่านั้น แต่หนังสือบางเล่มพอเคลือบฟิล์มเฉพาะเลขหมู่แล้วมักจะหลุดหายและสันที่ไม่ถูกเคลือบฟิล์มชำรุดเร็วกว่าทีควรจะเป็นจึงมีการเปลี่ยนวิธีเคลือบฟิล์มใหม่  แบบนี้ค่ะ
