เพื่อให้ผู้ใช้สามารถเข้าถึงทรัพยากรสารสนเทศได้อย่างสะดวก รวดเร็วและตรงตามความต้องการ ชื่อเรื่องเป็นสิ่งสำคัญ ในการลงรายการบรรณานุกรมทรัพยากรสารสนเทศ นอกจากการลงรายการชื่อเรื่องที่เหมาะสม (Title Proper) ยังมีชื่อเรื่องอีกประเภทที่มีความสำคัญคือ ชื่อเรื่องแบบฉบับ (Uniform Titles)
